Low Calorie Blackberry Basil Moscow Mule with a Twist!

Everyone loves a good summertime cocktail. There is seriously nothing better than a delicious, refreshing cocktail to cool you down on a hot summer day.

We decided to create our own summer cocktail. One that was unique, easy, and super low in calories. The trial and error period was so much fun. Even if the drink wasn’t the drink, it still tasted amazing and we could drink a cocktail and have a good time. Throughout this bartending phase of ours, we learned so many great drink recipes. We actually decided to create our own cocktail every time we throw a party to personalize the night and add a creative twist to a normal dinner party or gathering.

Once we decided to take a popular cocktail and add a twist, the recipe became a piece of cake to create. We love moscow mules, but decided they feel kind of wintery, especially because of the ginger beer. So, that led us to our unique creation: blackberry basil moscow mules! They are not only delicious, but also are low in calories and have a light, summery feel to them.

Blackberry and basil, a fantastic combination if you haven’t tried it already, and a unique twist on the popular moscow mule recipe. Rather than adding ginger beer to the recipe, we like to add ginger ale in the summer to create a lighter, more refreshing drink.

Here are the recipes for both an individual drink and a pitcher of the Blackberry Basil Moscow Mule!

Single Serving // calories per glass: 190

½ cup              blackberries

2 ounces         vodka

½ tbsp             truvia (or other calorie free sweetener)

1-2 limes         (squeeze for juice)

¾ cup              diet ginger ale (or diet ginger beer for traditional moscow mule)

3-5 leaves       basil

Instructions: Muddle the blackberries and basil leaves with your choice of calorie free sweetener and 2 ounces of vodka. Muddle the contents until the mixture is smooth or drain the liquid mixture into a shaker, avoiding the thick contents of the blackberries. I prefer to drain the liquid to keep my drink smooth, but it also tastes great with the blackberry chunks! In the shaker, combine the muddled contents with the juice from 1-2 limes (depending on how tart you like it). Shake well and pour into a moscow mule mug. Add crushed ice and top with diet ginger ale (or diet ginger beer if you want to keep the original moscow mule flavor). Enjoy!

Garnish: basil leaves, blackberries, lime wedge

Pitcher // serves 4 people, calories per pitcher: 760

12-15 leaves   basil
